"Pray for [Healing Streams] to come again.”  Butembo Pastor, DRC

Healing Streams is pleased to announce a  3-city, 5-week tour of Eastern Congo planned for the Fall 2008.  This tour will build on our previous projects which includes the Hope and Healing Train-the-Trainer Seminar in 2006 and the Training Manual that followed the seminar in 2007.

Our Work
The Congolese Humanitarian Organization CSCODI, has invited us to return to Beni, DRC to conduct a second Train-the-Trainer seminar entitled Hope and Healing: Recovery from War Trauma & Rape Module II This seminar will take place in Beni, Congo, the same city where we conducted our first seminar in 2006. While there we will distribute our new training manual: Hope and Healing: Recovery from Rape and War Trauma.

This trip will also include presenting Module I in the neighbouring city of Bukavu and travel to 3 area hospitals for staff education in post-trauma.

Background:
Our Congolese hosts tell us that the treatment of women in DRC has created the milieu for the atrocities of rape to run rampant.  A spokesperson for the UN reported that in the first 6 months of 2007, there were 4,500 reported rapes in South Kivu.  Although the violence has decreased significantly and the country is moving ahead with its new democratic governing structure, pockets of violence remain.  They state that now is the time to act—the time to train leaders in healthy relationships where sons and husbands learn love their wives as themselves, rather than treating them like property, shaming them and shunning them after they are raped.

And the reality is that although the original focus of our training was on the recovery from rape, the majority of the participants stated that they personally benefited from the training as they realized that they too had experience trauma – through displacement, premature death of friends and family members, witnessing atrocities or experiencing torture.  We are privileged to provide the skills and training to assist these people whose normal coping mechanisms have been severely overtaxed.
